1989 Unknown Winner: Best Supporting Actress in The Accidental Tourist

Geena Davis

Born on Jan. 21, 1956, in Wareham, Mass., Geena Davis spent most of her young life being the tallest girl in school. But she used this to her professional advantage by joining a modeling agency at age 23.

Director Sydney Pollack hired her in a memorable supporting role opposite Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie (1982), and Davis struck gold again with Chevy Chase in Fletch (1985) and opposite future husband Jeff Goldblum in the remake of The Fly (1986). Her comedic skills took flight with two 1988 hits -- Beetlejuice and The Accidental Tourist, which earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. But her performance in Thelma & Louise (1991) proved she was just as capable of dramatic work and earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Turning her talents to TV, Davis scored an Emmy nod in 2006 for her role as the nation's first female president in the political drama "Commander in Chief."

The Fly  1986  3.4 ★ 95 mins Horror Movies Rated: R RT:91%

As his reporter girlfriend (Geena Davis) bears witness, Seth slowly -- and quite disgustingly -- morphs into an insect. David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of the Vincent Price original achieves an unlikely concoction of horror, romance and pathos, thanks largely to Goldblum's strangely touching performance.

In The Fly, Jeff Goldblum stars as a scientist whose experiments cross human and fly DNA with terrifying and very personal results, while in The Fly 2, Eric Stoltz stars as the scientist's son trying to rid himself of the genetic curse he inherited. Based on the original 1958 schlock horror film of the same name, director David Cronenberg's creepy and surprisingly emotional The Fly also stars Geena Davis and John Getz.
