Synopsis

Can men and women remain friends without sex getting in the way? Nora Ephron's episodic screenplay introduces womanizing, neurotic Harry (Billy Crystal) and ambitious, equally neurotic Sally (Meg Ryan) as chums who resist sexual attraction to maintain their friendship -- a relationship always teetering on the brink of love. As the two draw closer, the question resurfaces: Can they stay just pals? Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby co-star.

Paggie:

One of those great, simple and enjoyable chick flicks you'll want to watch over and over. I'm guilty of at least half a dozen viewings before returning it. Keep in mind, this is the film that started Meg Ryan's type casting in the Romantic Comedy. So enjoy it more for all the crap that followed.

Paul Whitted:

Review by Elle: Appropriately named, simple and yet, so complex. When Harry Met Sally is a modern romantic comedy. It is difficult not to become completely immersed with their story. We care about the characters and feel as if they are our friends. As an audience, we identify with their fears, heartbreak, and friendship. The development of their friendship is realistically portrayed as the years pass. Even visually, the 70's to 80's hairstyles, from Sally's feathered tresses, to her tight 80's perm, is a hoot to watch. If you have ever had a best friend or true love, you will identify with the humor and chemistry displayed between the two characters in this film. In concept, it may seem to be a cliched theme, two people meet and fall in love. However, love nor friendship, is never as simple as it seems. Love is complicated and takes more than just sex and attraction to stay strong, real, and precious. True love is about frienship, chemistry, and laughter, no matter how much two people disagree. This film portrays this message perfectly. They annoy, hate, disagree, and laugh at each other and with each other, incessantly. However, when their is enough time spent without one another, they miss each other and try diligently to justify and believe that they are happy and content living their separate lives. Are Harry and Sally going to allow themselves to love one another? We find ourselves wanting to scream at the characters or take them out for cups of coffee and talk them into making amends because we know they belong together. We want it to be more than just, When Harry Met Sally. We want these characters to be our best friends seperately, but we also want them to be the couple that we invite over for dinner and a board game. The individual characters are strongly developed and the accomplishment of these quirky opposites coming together is nothing less than a sweet success.

AtTheBeach:

Most memorable quote: Harry: "There are two kinds of women: high maintenance and low maintenance. Sally: Which one am I? Harry: You're the worst kind. You're high maintenance but you think you're low maintenance." If you like Meg Ryan and you like romantic movies, you will like this When Harry Met Sally". Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are a good team. While the ending is predictable, Meg Ryan's display of faking a female orgasm while sitting in a restaurant may be one of the most memorable scenes in a romantic movie--even if it makes some folks feel a little uncomfortable at the truth played out in the scene. It makes the viewer laugh and feel good and a good chance for a couple of have an enjoyable evening watching another well-done Meg Ryan romantic comedy with a talented actor playing the role of her romantic interest.

BlueVoid:

A classic romantic comedy. Every time the mood becomes too sappy Billy Crystal breaks out into a brilliant comical tirade to lighten the mood. The chemistry between Crystal and and Ryan is undeniable. While I don't think it pushes the boundaries of its genre, perhaps it's because this is the film that set those boundaries.
