In my opinion this is the best version of the legendary shootout at the OK Corral and the events that transpired.Kurt Russell in his finest performance as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer does a great job playing Doc Holliday. The cast did a great job showing that the good guy doesn't always win and the director kept the story factually correct.I can watch this film over and over and never get tired of it.

Nazar Rizvi:

Would recommend this to anyone who likes cowboy movies. Wats surprising was it had a good story-line with a little bit of cowboy action. People say Kurt Russell was good, personally I thought Vali Kilmer stole the limelight.

It's the whole Earp family together for a reunion! Say it with me because it's funny: Earp! Earp earp earp. Ok, enough of that - Tombstone is a rather lengthy story about the confrontation between the Earp brothers and a band of outlaws, with a rather entertaining toss-in of a perpetually drunk Doc Holiday, played somewhat gleefully by Val Kilmer. It's mostly a buddy movie/western with as much gunplay as social interaction between the characters. It trends towards the rather predictable and winds down without a significant climax and with rather soggy drama that doesn't really seem to fit. I recall being told that it was extremely gory when it first came out, but there's nothing even approaching unacceptable levels of blood for the film that it is. It's generally adequate entertainment, but could use about 45 mins worth of trimming. Bring lots of popcorn.

One of my favorite Westerns. Val Kilmer robably gives his best performance. And watching this recently, almost every charachter with a speaking part has gone on to bigger things. Oh, and Powers Boothe and the one and only Michael Beihn make great bad guys.

The 5 stars are for Val Kilmer's performance as Doc. He embodies the wry, dry humor and cool head that made this gambler and murderer a legend. His performance will stay with you long after the movie is forgotten. Kilmer's embodiment of the character is the stuff of legend.

BunnyKing:

This movie isn't too bad, relatively entertaining. I like Kilmer's performance and I think this was a good chance for Russell. In fact, I believe Russell's performance really stole the show. If you're a fan of westerns, this one won't disappoint.

Serafina:

Formulaic to the core. Cliche and over-the-top, but does it really well. A fun ride all around. Plus: Russell, Kilmer, Paxton and Elliot? Genius. All at their peak. I miss Good Val Kilmer. I enjoyed it, but it was a tad long.

I only just watched this movie for the first time, a good 12 years after it came out. I had been told by many of my friends that it was awesome, and especially that Val Kilmer was great in it. Kilmer is great, but pretty much everything else about this movie is high-gloss, cliched hollywood garbage. While I'm sure the art direction in the movie is very true to life, none of the actors (except for maybe Sam Elliott and Val Kilmer) *sound* like cowboys. It was also particularly distracting that this movie has an endless parade of actors in cameo roles. I felt like I counted a good 20 or 30 "name" actors in the movie, very few of whom actually brought any authenticity to the roles. Ironically enough, I felt like the science-fiction series Firefly was a better western than this was.

TheMovieCurmudgeon:

Another case of Hollywood suits tampering with history. Tombstone's excellent cast, especially Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday (and dig the moustaches), is undercut towards the third reel by a tacked-on, Hollywood-style ending. If this would have ended after the gunfight at the OK Corral, it would have been a modern western to rival "Unforgiven." But it seems the studio system just couldn't resist the cliches of romance & revenge. Still, a fun western with some great performances (the actors seem like they are having fun with their roles) -- a cut above tripe like "Young Guns" but falling short of classics old and new ("The Wild Bunch" and "Unforgiven.")
