Synopsis

Sidney Poitier stars as Mark Thackeray, an engineer by training who reluctantly takes a teaching job in a working-class London high school. His unruly students (played by an impressive group of unknowns) assume they'll easily gain the upper hand. Poitier, of course, has other ideas. Eventually he wins the students over, changing their lives -- and his -- in the process.

Coldplayer:

After viewing this film, I'm not sure what's so controversial about it. The way Mr. Thackery treats the students or the way issues are addressed throughout. Surprisingly simplistic, the film moves at a quick pace. Sydney Poitier is phenominal. The virtually unknown supporting cast is great aside him. Unfortunately, what could have been some of the best scenes (field trip) was turned into a montage. Oh, and a young Patricia Routledge was fun to see.
