Can I get a big OOH RAH to the underlying message of this seemingly no-brainer action movie, the reason the good Colonel sacrifices all to get the truth heard(Hes not simply disgruntled you simple tools):this country sends our best and bravest out there at the tip of the spear and then,as a reward, they give em the shaft.....
This is one of my favorite Nicholas Cage's movies. Cage protrays a FBI special weapons agent. He has to go to The Rock where there is a hostage situation and numerous chemical bombs waiting to be deployed into the San Fransico City. The one problem is how to get into The Rock without being detected. So they make an agreement to pardon the former immate that successfully escaped once before. The people who took over The Rock are not your oridinary "give me what I want or else" type, these are marines that have been treated wrongfully while defending this country. Very good movie with a lot of action. Ed Harris co-stars as the disgruntled Marine.
It has been ten years since "The Rock" was unleashed onto the masses. I wish that I saw it then. I would have been blown away by it's slam bang action scenes and highly dramatic camera stylings. It would have done for me what Armageddon did for me when I first saw that.
Now what makes The Rock stand the test of time are the performances. Sean Connery is cool as hell and Nick Cage is Snarky as ever. I love his introduction as a Beatles and Record freak. Great little color. However the subplot of Connery's estranged daughter felt a little forced.
But who watches a action movie for the story or the performances? It's the action mister!!! I heard about the great car chase in the streets of San Francisco as one of the best. However I have only one car chase that would make me stand up and cheer and it ain't "Bullet". It is "Gone in 60 Seconds" and not the Nick Cage Abortion from the late 90's. I'm talking about the 1974 original (God I feel like I'm quoting Tarantino from "Deathproof" in this review but it is true.) This Car chase doesn't hold up. However the other Action sequences did and this movie is fun. I would recommend it to people that aren't that well versed in film or just want a movie to just turn off their brain. When I do Turn off my brain, It is fun.
One of Bruckheimer & Bay's big three chozgobblers, along with Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. Terrible, terrible things happen when those two get together, and The Rock is no exception. Hey Jerry Bruckheimer... suck my balls!
