Synopsis

In this adaptation of Oscar Wilde's witty play about mistaken identities, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth star as two proper gentlemen in 1890s London who use the same pseudonym with disastrous results. At a country estate, they fall in love with two ladies -- Cecily (Reese Witherspoon) and Gwendolyn (Frances O'Connor). But the hilarious confusion that ensues from their noms de guerre could sink their respective chances at romance.

A great compromise movie for couples. Guys like me who wince at the prospect of snoring through another Merchant & Ivory-style costume drama with their significant other will be pleasantly surprised by "Earnest." Wilde's story and jokes more than stand the test of time. Women will enjoy the romance while guys will enjoy the comical lengths the two male leads go to outfox each other. At last a costume flick that will keep your eyes wide open & a wide smile on your face.

Skorpean:

Wonderful dialogue and entertaining story adapted from an Oscar Wilde play about the late 19th century England and all the "proper" upper class people and how difficult it was to marry someone without the proper pedigree. The actors deliver the wit effortlessly, though Reese Witherspoon seems a bit out of place (probably my own prejudices). This movie should be seen by anyone interested in English period pieces, especially if you appreciate the wit and satire of Oscar Wilde (I also highly recommend "An Ideal Husband", also with Rupert Everett). 5/08

Rigel:

The retelling of a classic Oscar Wilde story about the hazards and benefits of fiction. You have to both like Oscar Wilde's dry, deadpan humor and Victorian era themes. If you're still in the game, then this is a very funny, quick moving story. Very light and enjoyable. It also co-stars one of my favorite actors, Dame Judy Dench who is at her english best. The one-liners are half the movie's entertainment.
