Set in 1900 on an English county estate, this BAFTA-winning drama exploring class division and desire centers on a boy named Leo, a houseguest at the manor. On the sly, the aristocratic Marian (Julie Christie), who's promised to a nobleman (Edward Fox), convinces Leo to carry love letters to and from her rakish neighbor, the low-born Ted (Alan Bates). In the process, the boy's eyes are opened to the often sordid world of adult relationships.
