Southern Belle 1:

I am cautiously rating this movie about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas 3 stars and leaning toward 2.5. With Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Cillian Murphy headlining, I expected something fantastic. What was delivered was something quite ordinary. Matthew Rhys plays Dylan Thomas, a man who is married to one woman (Miller), but is captivated by another, his childhood friend (Knightley). The setting is war-torn London where the bombs fall all too close for comfort and opportunistic couplings take place. But this film is too stylized - more intent on imagery and less intent on biography. And although I should have felt a deep emotional attachment to these characters, as they should have been sympathetic enough, I felt nothing for them. The incessant verbal lashings, chain smoking, and drunken tirades grew tiresome, and in the end, my only sympathy went to the adorable little baby who had to endure Keira Knightley pretending to be his mother. The best parts of this picture were the cinematography, costumes, and ultra-skinny and equally beautiful Sienna and Keira romping around the 1940's UK like giddy school girls in bright, red lipstick. 09-27-09

Edge of Love (2008): If you enjoy eating a boxful of Twinkies, then this cream-filled spongecake of a film will satisfy. The surface entices with beautiful cinematography and two lovely women locked in a love triangle with a famous poet. However, the slick core of the film has little substance with quips from Dylan Thomas strung together nonsensically, at times. The plot failed to develop into anything offering meaningful insights into the life of Dylan Thomas. The Blitz itself could have offered a number of interesting situations that never appeared. The box sure looked good sitting on the shelf, but the contents left me with nothing but a stomach-ache. 2 stars (7/21/09)

I love Dylan Thomas... I like this film. Do I think this is a great film? No. But it's a decent love triangle story that involves one of the greatest poets to ever live. The story is about two of the women who were most important in Thomas' life... his wife and his former mistress. The story unfolds as the three come together and apart with the mistress eventually marrying another man. Both of the leading ladies are solid. Knightley and Miller are cast perfectly in their roles. My main criticism of the film is that it drags a lot. The story always feels an arm's length away. I think the problem is mainly in the scripting which detaches the characters from the audience. Still I would recommend this film to fans of literature and romance.

Netflowers:

I liked viewing this movie about Dylan Thomas and the 2 loves in his life. Keira Knightley is gorgeous, she doesnt play a femme fatale, but a beautiful, flirty elusive girlfriend who attracts Dylan and Dylans wife played by Sienna Miller, who is also gorgeous. Both women are of high spirts and makes for an interesting combination, seductive looks and smiles endless flirting, hoping in and out of bed. A very enjoyable movie. I recommend THE EDGE OF LOVE

While entertaining, this movie wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped. The premise was interesting enough, and the nackdrop of the London blitz certainly added to the overall sense of tension in the film, but I guess the fact that Dylan was so difficult to like made it difficult for me to engage with the characters. Surprisingly enough, it was Sienna Miller who gave the most moving performance in the entire film. While not a briliant or spectacular movie, it wasn't bad. If you're a Dylan Thomas fan or Kiera Knightley fan you'll probablly like it.
