Johnny Depp plays his usual offbeat character, and does it very well. The special effects were decent. The storyline is a weak spot, as is the character portrayed by Ricci (her acting in the film is nothing to write home about). If you rent it you won't feel cheated, but you also won't think it was a movie you couldn't live without seeing either.
My natural reaction to this film was one of disappointment solely over the plot; I've studied Washington Irving's masterpiece and I was really excited to see Burton, of all people, directing a film based on the original story. Of course, as you will shortly see, this is not a true-to-tale rendition. However, do not let that hinder your viewing. Burton is a master of creating dark, moody landscapes, and he chooses actors that can offer a twist. Depp is not simply a detective, he's a wimp; Ricci is not merely a cute daughter, she's a fledgling witch. The story also has some twists that although quite possible to guess, aren't readily apparent. I think my only disappointment was that Burton chose to reveal the face of the horseman. Of course, what did I expect? And if anyone would do it, I would want Burton. However, there is something creepier in not knowing who is chasing you and by giving him a face, you take some of that away. In any case, this film is not to be missed, and still rings faithful to the story, as well as some bits from the Disney version (cartoon). Excellent and fun, 4 stars!
The movie crept along in several places, Christina Ricci's acting left a lot to be desired and it wasn't the least bit scary. I give it two severed heads.
Truelly a great movie..has it all the black and white.. excellent!! But, because of the endind..I wouldn't give it a 5 star. The story is there..but the ending not good..oh well.
