Compared to all other Hugh Grant romantic comedies, I enjoyed this one as much or more than the others. However, don't expect any departures from the rom-com formula and don't expect any surprises. In MICKEY BLUE EYES Grant plays an attractive, but vulnerable art house (think Sotheby's) auctioneer who has fallen in love with a mobster's (James Caan) daughter (a young Jeanne Tripplehorn). He is not familiar with the New York mafia families, so is totally unaware of the connection. As he gets in deeper and deeper, he becomes involved in money laundering and is referred to as ?Mickey Blue Eyes? from Kansas City, a completely bogus name. The FBI is suspicious when a body is discovered in a shallow grave. And it turns out that Grant's character is very much involved in a shooting and a middle-of-the-night run with a body in his trunk. If you do not enjoy Hugh Grant's style of comedy, skip this one because Grant carries this film almost single-handedly. But if you might like a satire about the characters in "The Sopranos," all of whom seemed to appear in this movie at one time or another, and you might enjoy hearing some of the music from that TV show, this one should provide two hours of hilarious mayhem and good-natured fun. You might even find yourself chuckling a time or two. 01-14-10
I expected another fluffy, fish-out-of-water screwball comedy - a genre that's harder than it looks, and that Hugh Grant has such a deft touch with. But somehow it never really got rolling. Then when somebody actually gets killed (admittedly a minor and unlikable character), it just feels very not-funny. Don't get me wrong - I love black comedy. It's just that the complete absence of chemistry and lack of connection between any of the characters made me feel like each person was in a different film.
This was a surprisingly funny movie! I wasn't expecting much, as I have not been generally impressed with Hugh Grant movies. But there are a lot of funny scenes, and the cast is very good together. It's got a fast, witty script, and it is overall entertaining. Definitely worth the rental!
Under normal circumstances I might have reviewed this DVD, but when NF implemented the new DVD page detail design they removed friends' ratings, top 10 lists and the ability to send movie notes. That made it harder for me and others to find movies we'll like. If you are reading this, please call NetfIix and ask them to give us the community features back. I apologize for this non-review.
This was my wife's selection, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the "fuhgeddaboudit" bit shown in the trailers was, in fact, not the funniest line in the movie, but actually one of its weaker moments. I laughed more often than not at the comic bits, though it was marred a little by the romance elements that only took us away from the important bits - the "humour." (PS: James Caan was great!)
