Everyone seems to be comparing this to "Oceans Eleven", but I'd describe this more of a Latino "The Magnificent Seven" or even a good episode of "The A-Team " since at its core it's about a rugged band of "good guys" trying to help the oppressed. So yes, fine, there is an implausible and intricately planned caper but there is so much more going on than that. There are actors from several Latin American countries, and they all bring a sense of their own distint culture to the film. Even if you don't recognize all the actors from telenovelas or Spanish language movies, you'll enjoy watching the motley crew that is brought together not just by the desire to carry out this crime against one of their own (i.e. both another thief and a fellow Latino) but by a desire to avenge/help their fellow immigrants. If you are not watching this movie just because of the subtitles - get over it! - it's worth your while.

Brier Patch:

This is a competent heist flick, nothing more. The characters are one dimensional and there is very little in the way of drama or suspense. It is the lack of the last element that is least forgiveable for a heist movie. Despite its flaws, it passes the time pleasantly enough. The most interesting element is that even though it takes place in LA, it is a spanish language movie featuring a slew of latino immigrants from different countries. They may be caricatures, but it was refreshing to get that perspective and it almost made LA feel like a foreign country. If only some gritty reality had been injected to offset the slick, wannabe Oceans 11 vibe.

excellent heist movie from Mexico 2007. really this is better than oceans eleven. More colorful cast of characters. good cinematography sets. good plot though hardly believable. Very Good escapist entertainment from Joe Menendez Mexican director. four stars. maybe even more.

If I had one criticism of this movie it was that, like Ocean's 11, the whole plan went too smoothly. But that is a minor quibble about what is otherwise a very enjoyable film.

unsquare:

The poster art implies a movie much slicker than the actual result, which is far more generic and fails to rise above its low-budget nature. The characters are under-developed, the tension is lacking, the cast seems plucked directly from the world of soap operas (apparently true, from reading the other reviews), and there are several giant plot-holes that took me completely out of the movie. It's kind of interesting seeing Julie Gonzalo (from Veronica Mars and Eli Stone) playing a Spanish language role, but not that interesting. She isn't really given that much to do with herself.

It was better the first time I saw it when it was called Ocean's Eleven, but it was still pretty entertaining.
