Synopsis

Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Part 2) directs this remake of George A. Romero's classic zombie flick Day of the Dead, in which a mysterious disease causes the newly dead to come back to life and threaten the living. Meanwhile, military and scientific experts clash as they try to arrive at a solution. Miner and writer Jeffrey Reddick honor the story and social relevance of the first film but put a fresh spin on this tale of horror and intrigue.

JB Seriously 55:

Could a more predictible and contrived PG-13 gorefest with a weak storyline and tepid suspense ever be made? I shouldn't ask that question, because I am afraid the answer would be yes. The acting was mediocre at best. The fight scenes were so staged I thought I could hear them counting their steps. The script was poor and the myriad of coincidences were obsurd. A real poor effort in my opinion. (6/27/08)

I have removed this review as a protest against NF highly obnoxious banishment of Friends Features. Thanks to a recent update to the movie detail page, I can no longer see what my friends and family think of ANY of the movies on this website, the top 10 lists have been removed, and I can no longer send movie notes to friends. I realize that some members do not utilize these features, and if you are one of those members, please accept my apologies for removing this review. However, many longtime members have treasured these features for years, and although complaints have been lodged to NF by a wide variety of members, our concerns have been collectively ignored. Weve shown loyalty to you, NF. Show some loyalty to us, and give us back our friends.

jcranma:

(2.5/5) Passable and acceptable only IF one likes zombie and/or "B" flicks. This "neo"(READ: running and able to learn) zombie flick should appeal to the fans of those two genres while the rest should queue other selections. "Day" features idiotic and unbelievable characters backed by weak performances (Suvari has fallen to such lows since "American Pie" even if her looks and acting have actually improved). A script even more idotic believe it or not is thrown into the mix as well well. The VFX is "B" level with some rather low rent camera techniques. The gore factor is lacking. Surprisingly, the 5.1 track kicks in at appropriate times even though it is rather muted. The neat thing about this are the action scenes. They are plentiful enough, but they can't even come close to redeeming this average duck. If you are looking for a zombie fix, queue George Romero's original trilogy. If one prefers a "neo" zombie fix, try Zack Snyder's remake of "Dawn of the Dead" first before moving onto the "Resident Evil" series. You'll get more entertainment that way. (09/14/08)

Firewater:

The original DAY OF THE DEAD is the only one of the Romero "trilogy" that I have trouble remembering. I know that it had something to do with the military and underground bunkers of some sort, and I know that I liked it least. I suspect that this remake had very little to do with the original, though. It is a pretty standard zombie movie where a virus causes you to become the living dead. This time around, the zombies move fast, ala 28 DAYS LATER. As I wrote in my review to that film, fast zombies are better and scarier than slow zombies. There is a lot of CGI gore, and the story moves at a pretty brisk pace, but don't expect high art here. Of course, no one who queues up a zombie movie is necessarily after high art.

Deus Ex Machina:

Oh how disappointing. Here you are with the honor of remaking a George Romero classic, and you have zombies crawling on the ceiling. I can accept super-fast zombies, I can accept super-strong zombies, I can even over look the fact that these zombies are highly flammable and burn away to ash like they were vampires in the daylight, but crawling on the walls and ceilings? Why was that necessary? Nick Cannon and Mena Suvari aren't believable as soldiers, and the back stories are wimpy and underdeveloped. If I could give half stars, this one would be 2.5. 20080425

w00f:

While other reviewers are absolutely correct when they say this flick has nothing to do with any of the George Romero movies, and it's not exactly honest to use the name of one of them. The only things in common are the names of some of the characters (including the best-known zombie from Romero's original) and the military theme, albeit vaguely so. While Miner's remake has none of the style or finesse of the Romero films, it's still an enjoyable enough zombie action shoot-'em-up and watch the heads fly movie. If you're looking for a Romero-like movie, pass this by. If you've got an hour and a half to kill and enjoy a good video nasty now and again, you might like this one.

Awful movie that really has nothing at all to do with the original day of the dead. DO NOT WATCH THIS ITS A WASTE OF TIME.

moviesorfilm:

Where do I start at how bad this really is? REALLY bad editing, camera work, special effects and makeup. Nothing at all to do with the Romero movies and Steve Miner should be ashamed, such a load of crap. Mena Suvari looks stupid prancing around with a gun trying to look all military bad, whomever thought she was perfect for the role of Sarah needs a new profession. The camera trick of all the stop-motion type speed up zombie work was really annoying and didn't trick me into thinking that the zombies were faster and stronger, they just looked bad. Please do not waste time on this movie, it really stunk.

deadzone:

This movie sucked hard. Please do not waste your time on this horrible movie. It has absolutely nothing in common with the original Romero masterpiece. Pass - don't say I never warned you.

Killer Klown:

As I see it, the Zombie Movie genera has teirs of quality. The top teir would be composed of the Resident Evil trilogy, 28 Days/Weeks Later. The second teir would have Land of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead; I would say this Day of teh Dead movie fallis in tis quality level. The bottom tier would be all the low-budget zombie films, all of the night of the living dead movies and others. Day of the Dead is set in a small town which has been quarentened by the US Army for a Flu epidemic. People die, zombies come alive, if they bite you you become one. One difference in this film from the genera is the speed of the zombies; most of the time zombies are slow, in this film they are faster than humans. It is good to see Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Mena Suvary (American Beauty), and Nick Cannon (Drumline) bringing some star quality to the cast.

Wyled Heart:

I think a better name for this movie would be Hyperactive Ninja Zombies - as another reviewer noted, theyre not your typical slow, plodding, brainless creatures, but smart, quick & agile. The world wouldnt stand a chance in a zombie apocalypse consisting of such as these! That aside, its a right good & bloody gore-fest. The outbreak sort of percolates in the background & out of sight for about the first 15 minutes or so as they try to set up the main characters in such a way as to familiarize you with them enough to care, then the zombies show up. Once they do, its pandemonium and blood & guts galore all the way until the final conclusion, which Ill not spoiler for anyone by describing here. Not much story-wise, but its a good gore fest fright flick - something you might want to watch while eating extra saucy spaghetti & maybe some really thick, runny strawberry jello just for icks. ;-) For what it is, 1.75 thumbs up. It would have been 2 if they hadnt used the name Day of the Dead & made it out to be some sort of remake - its not a remake, it has nothing to do with the original. But its still pretty good as is.

There are quite a few high-ranking negative reviews - I worry that these reviews are judging from a rather high standard. No, this isn't a great movie by any stretch, but there are a few things I look for in zombie movies: nice people who will later be EATEN; the first few zombies unleashed on an unsuspecting public; one of the main character's fmaily members doomed to be killed by their own family; incompetent military officials; competent wisecracking low-ranking military privates that are excellent shots; evil guys who help at first but really they're just serving their own best self-interests; some crazy scheme to get gas/escape a building/etc. that will put everyone at risk and result in one or more members of the survivors getting infected: this movie has all that. It also has semi-plausible reasons for the characters going to really stupid places to defend against the horde. And Mena Suvari has got a really crappy agent, because she really isn't a bad actress. Sure, it's not a remake of the greatest zombie film EVER, and it would have been nice to at least include a scene where the no-nonsense heroine CHOPS SOMEONE'S ARM OFF to prevent infection, but instead this film pays homage to the "Bub" storyline of the original - handled a little better, actually. This isn't a GORE zombie movie, although it has some of that - it's more just your typical zombie apocalypse movie. It's fun. Give it a try.

MattChance:

Day of the Dead certainly has a made-for-DVD feel, with about the only things making it good being some of the actors, and a few fun action scenes (The zombies in this movie - they're the acrobatic type - seriously, one of them pulls a Spider-man and crawls on a ceiling!). Mena Suvari is particularly likeable in this, and you root for her. Nick Cannon, take him or leave him, he's not really doing much in this movie. As far as the horror goes, it's not too crazy, the usual zombies tearing skin off and eating it - you'll find that in any zombie movie you can think of. The cover is misleading because not one zombie vomits in the entire movie - I really wanted to see that scene! It's just a blah movie, where the amateur director gets a chance to try out all of his quick cuts and shaky cameras. Nothing special about it at all.

videoguy1million:

When I watch low budget films I like to make note of the the things they do wrong. For example, I say, Great concept, but lousy script, or Great story but the actors are not very good., or This movie would be awesome if they only had half a million dollars instead of only 50 thousand. With this movie there are no excuses. They had a decent budget, professional actors (Ving Rames for christs sake!), and a concept thats really easy to work with...And they still blew it! This movie sucks! The story sucks, the characters dont make any sense and the zombie FX are lame. Even the filmmaking basics are amatuerish. For example, Mena Suvari is supposed to be in the army, but she has Marine Corps rank on her uniform and everyone elses uniform is different as well. Yeah, in the Army they let you throw together your own ensemble! This movie looks like trash, sounds like trash and stinks like trash!

NETFLICK:

Day of the Dead is a cheesy zombie flick with plenty of gore to go around. However the casting was bad as well as the acting, stupid one-liners almost made this a comedy.Predictable action sequences you could guess the ending easily.

cb6cb7acf9:

It's terrible that this pile even has the same name as the Romero classic. This movie is in no way authorized or indorsed by George Romero, and should not be viewed. Pure crap. Watch the original instead.

BloodyShadows:

This isn't bad. If you forget that its titled 'Day of the Dead' and take it for the straight-to-video B-movie that it is, then it delivers. The gore is there, the story is different, this is definitely an 'infection' sub-genre of Zombie cinema, making it more akin to the 28 Days/Weeks Later series. The zombies run, climb up the walls, and are seemingly indestructible, save for the head shot. The acting: Ving Rhames has a small part and his character is given no background or character. He has to large a role to call it a cameo, which makes it all the more strange that his role is squandered here. Mena Suvari is totally unbelieveable as the military chick. The way she reads lines is hilarious - this gives it good campy fun. But, really, she's awful. Same goes for Nick Cannon. He's not playing a character here, he's just doing the 'Nick Cannon'-schtick. All that aside, I didn't hate it. Actually, wasn't as good as the 'Dawn' remake, but there are some memorable moments and good gore. This film is nothing like 'Day of the Dead' (1985), although it does pay homage to both it and Dawn, and lots of other horror-movie cliches. Summary, its fun enough! Zombie heads should consider it high grade, B-movie horror.

ykf 483620:

Terrible. There is nothing good about this film, and I'm frankly amazed this piece of zombie excrement got the cast that it did. Day of the Dead is supposed to be a remake of the classic Romero film. I guess by remake they mean it has also has zombies in it. There is no comparison. The story line is changed, the action is changed, the social commentary is gone... and zombies apparently now can not only run, but use tools, climb the walls like spiderman, have superstrength and speed, can fly through the air... and have human like emotion. Sound like a classic Romero film to you? Me neither. On top of that, this isn't even a good zombie movie on its own. It's cheesy, its gore is weak and it's shot and directed like a youtube video. Bottomline, this movie is terrible... there's actually a line in it that says something like, "Why doesn't this zombie try to eat me?" "He was a vegetarian." For real? I recommend it to no one.

batman1784:

Really thought this was a good movie. I know that zombie movies are usually dumb and predictable but this one was done perfectly. I can't get over the affects of how the zombies were. Yes the plot was just ok but the emphasizes were on the blood and gore of the zombies. You have to watch. And zombie fans this is another great George A. Romero film.

AZ 591474:

They should have used a different title for this movie as it's not a remake of DOD or has any connection with the movie. It was pretty cool though and I liked it, not a lot of plot but it's a zombie movie, just don't compare it to Romero's masterpiece, this is just a pretty entertaining, action packed, generic zombie movie.... that's all...
