Best likened to Thelma and Louise on crack. Nowhere near as entertaining either. You are not made to care about the characters. The acting is fairly good, but the sex scenes are too brutal to be erotic. Not near gross enough to have been banned in all those countries.
Hotter than most modern porn films, abd more violent than most films ever. LOTS of EXPLICIT sex and violence. Not for everyone, to be sure. Decent enough story carried by all the explicit nudity (male and female). Walt D in LV 5-19-06 mywife at cox.net
Sort of like "Thelma and Louise" meets "Bonnie and Clyde", with a little bit of hardcore and a lot of "Natural Born Killers" thrown in. It doesn't seem to have a moral or a social message, or even a grand "empowering women through mass murder" artistic statement. The film ends up seeming exploitative, and the character development of the two protagonists is shallow. The picture is somewhat grainy, and the copy I received was letterboxed, but had a 4:3 aspect ratio (which means to see it in widescreen on an HDTV, I had to adjust the settings on my DVD player). Heed the N-Flix warnings: this is a very explicit film, with lots of fake blood and the most explicit shots you will see this side of actual adult films.
This was not one of the infamous video nasties, but it is nonetheless a nasty video. The sex is raw and the violence is in-your-face, just like the title, which was nicely translated into "Rape Me" in the US. I noted that it was supposedly banned in it's home country, France, and it was certainly banned in other countries like Australia or heavily cut. Do not think for one moment that it was banned for sex or violence. It was banned because of the depiction of men in the film, not a single one with any redeeming social values. It is a hard film to take because all the men in it are pigs.
It is based upon a novel by Virginie Despentes who, with Coralie wrote and directed this film. This is a women's film about women's rage. If this is the way women really feel when they are pissed, then you better be warned.
It open with a rape that leaves nothing to the imagination. There is no doubt about the pain being felt. One of the victims, and another woman who just saw her friend killed, join together in an adventure across France. It becomes more and more violent as they go on. Not cartoonish, like Natural Born Killers, but raw violence; uncaring, unmerciful, and brutal.
The sex is real, but it is like nothing you see in porn films. The sex is driven by the women's needs, it shows the vulnerability of men during orgasm, and the men are discarded like used tissues, if they are not killed, when the women have been satisfied.
They even have a Thelma and Louise plan to die together by jumping off a cliff. Circumstances do not allow that to happen, and the ending is rather abrupt and somewhat lacking.
Men joke about PMS, but if it is anything like the rage depicted by the women who made this film, you better watch out. This rage is nothing to joke about.
It's kind of funny that so many people say that this movie is so shocking. Yes, there is hardcore sex in the film, helpfully filmed close up so that we can see the details - but if that's what you're looking for, just download some off the internet.
Yes, it's violent, but the movie was obviously made on a low budget and the "special effects" look like the sort that you make with corn syrup and food coloring.
Really, then, if you're aren't automatically impressed by graphic sex and bloody violence, sometimes at the same time, you'll find that this movie is remarkably dull. And long, at all of 70 minutes. About 30 minutes too long.
It helps that you never care about the characters and their vendetta never makes sense. If they're supposed to be advancing some sort of feminist agenda, I didn't get it - when they massacre everyone at the sex club, is that supposed to be some kind of statement... against sex or... exploitation or... what? (don't worry, i didn't ruin it.)
If it's just supposed to be a narrative story, it doesn't work because the "anti-heroes" of the story are never likable, and even an anti-hero has to be likable...
Well, that's another "shocking" french movie down... if you want to actually be shocked, just watch Irreversible. Doesn't mean it's good. Just... disturbing.
"Controversial" movie that fails on every level. The sex is not arousing in any way. The violence is not amusing or disgusting. It is not a thought provoking film. Its not well shot or well written. Its only ok as a "so bad its good" film and even then its not in any way recommended. A few funny (probably accidental) lines are the only enjoyment to be had. I like grindhouse movies, horror, splatter films, soft and hard porn, as well as artistic movies. The elements of this movie (rape, sex, and violence) are not off putting to me but the handling of everything is so amateurish that it offensive only to my taste in well executed movies. Even the rape seems too gently done to be disturbing. The acting is horrible. Two women get raped and kill people. The films throws a few more details of plot but gives them in a really disconnected way leaving no really story to get into. Thriller a Cruel Picture is a much better revenge movie with sex. Troma movies at their worst have more convincing special effects then this. Almost all blood is shown after the fact leaving it feeling very poorly done. Shortbus was a much better attempt at incorporating real sex with a real movie. I'm used to low budget movies but while some directors can do a lot with a low budget this gets nothing done and feels like it was done with the lowest budget possible. It's an exploitation flick (don't pretend its arthouse) that fails to use the elements it exploits (sex and violence) to be in any way interesting or entertaining. Its seems only those who justify as a deep feminist movie or those who have never seen a decent exploitation film are those who are the only ones shocked and impressed with the movie. Anyone who's watched porn and watched exploitation and horror thats decent will wonder what the fuss is about. Avoid unless you like to find depth in movies that have none. Deserves to be considered one of the worst movies ever.
