Synopsis

This movie adaptation of George Orwell's eerie, dystopian tale -- filmed during the year for which it's named -- follows the "reeducation" of two people who break the law in a totalitarian state by falling in love while Big Brother is watching. The film turned out to be Richard Burton's last, but it's also notable for its intriguing technique of shooting specific scenes from the novel on the exact dates they were specified in print.

Michael Radford

KitCarruthers:

A surprisingly good adaptation of a novel that would have seemed unadaptable to me. Though I liked Richard Burton, I preferred the first half of the film -- the brutality of all of O'Brien's philosophizing and exposition, which makes for great reading, doesn't translate well to film, and doesn't generate the same total emotional collapse as the novel. Jeers to the studio that ditched the original score against Radford's wishes in favor of a embarrassingly out of place Eurythmics soundtrack.

Rigel:

Whatever you may say about the qualities of the original book or the values and lessons embedded therein, they do not translate to the most recent film adaptation. It's trudgingly slow, lacking in clear development throughout the first half of the film - mostly a haze of bureaucracy masquerading as a plot, and barely audible mumbling by seemingly drugged actors. The plot points therein are conveyed in seconds, and then belabored to death through repetition and sloth-like pacing. Rather than forward the story, the scenes and locations merely repeat. Halfway through, the film abruptly becomes even less pleasant to watch...and then the lecture begins! Sleep-inducing and disappointing for such a well-regarded and referenced book.

Bryan Malone:

I read and loved the novel. I don't think this was as good as it could have been. While watching it, I would purposely forget what I had read for a moment to see if I could still tell what was happening.... I couldn't. It seems that they had left out quite a bit of the details the book had that really helped you to understand the background and to realize what is going on. I understood the book, but without it, I would have been almost completely lost with the movie. So really, the movie should only be seen by those who have read the book. If you haven't, don't bother, you more than likely will not be able to figure out what is happening. But then again, you should never watch the film before reading the book... it's always better the other way around.

I found this movie to be a bit slow dull and boring in every since of the way. I just could not get into this one at all. Just not my style of movie to watch.

This can be ordered online from the UK at many dvd stores.. and delivered to the US. Dont let the gov oppress such a movie. Purchase it like i did for $15, play on your computer, then share with everyone you know! Dont purchase from E bay since they are taking advantage of all of us at those prices. Online UK dvd stores happily sell it and ship it i got mine in 1 week. The reason its not available now is its out of print, and the "forces" that be wont allow it to be reprinted.
