This is normally not my genre, but was recommended. It is a typical teen story about pairing up, complete with the customary stereotypes. I watched it mainly for Heath Ledger and wasn't disappointed. He was excellent, including the little number he did on the stadium bleachers, ala John Travolta from Grease. This was entertaining, if you like these themes, the acting was fine, the music was great, and it was okay for killing a couple of hours. If you're a Ledger fan, however, it's a must-see.
While Clueless succeeds in presenting a modern interpretation of Jane Austen's Emma, 10 Things I Hate About You isn't successful in modernizing Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrew. The thing that saves this movie from getting 1 star from me is Heath Ledger's screen presence. This film is another proof of Ledger's talents.
Im not usually not a big fan of teen flicks, but this cutesy romantic comedy has a lot that puts it a cut above the rest. First there's the great chemistry betwen the two principals, Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. Then theres the great location shots of Seattle and its Elliot Bay, and the soundtrack dominated by Letters from Cleo. Finally, for you literature enthusiasts, it is fun to spot the parallels with Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." Not a great movie by any means, but if you can stand a bit of sexual innuendo and like fast-moving light comedy with all the high school sterotypes present, I highly recommend it. If you partake, be sure to hang on through the credits because there, lurk some hilarious outtakes.
This may be just another teenaged comedy/drama. But, it has Julia Stiles, who I will admit I am attracted to, even though she is waay too young for me. Heath Ledger is good in this one also. I liked this one a lot. Only 850,000 of you have rated this one. It should be over a million.
A modern take on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. A very endearing film that stands out among teen movies, and is enjoyable by all ages. I am not totally sure why, but 10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favorite movies, and even after having seen a multitude of times I still find it charming. This is a must see if you like romantic comedies.
Really great movie. Julia Stiles' best movie so far. It seemed like a regular teen movie, but unlike others, it actually has a great plot. Even though you can predict how it will end up, it's fun seeing how they get there. Watch the outtakes at the end of the credits!
This is a new verson of Tamming Teh Shrew. It had the present day steeings with the original story line. I really enjoyed this, great actors, including Heath Ledger's debut. Every teenager can relate with this movie. See It!!!
Far superior to most teen movies or romantic comedies. Weather it's the Shakespearean source material or just the scripts love of vocabulary it works for me.
"10 Things" starts off promisingly. When we first meet the jaded, x-rated novelist guidance counselor, the tone of sarcastic humor took me off guard. I expected a sappy, spunky teenage comedy similar to "American Pie." The first 15 minutes or so led me to believe I would be getting something more like "Saved," an exaggerrated satire on the characters from high school. Alas, I was misled. Once the feebly adapted "Taming of the Shrew" tale gets rolling, most of the funny lines and characters disappear, and the sense of humor that drove the first quarter of the movie is all but forgotten. I enjoyed small moments throughout the movie, such as Julia Styles' conversations with her father and sister or her exchanges with the crabby English teacher. Those moments tempt me to give a three star rating. However, because of the unrealized potential shown in the first part of the movie, I was more disappointed by the end than I would have been had the movie been mediocre from the start.
